Head Issues?

Head Issues?

There’s nothing worse than getting in front of a mirror and realising you have what feels like half your scalp flaking on your shoulders; or looking like you stuck your head in a bucket of olive oil.

At one time or other throughout our lives, most of us will have a scalp concern of some sort. Most can be easily treated by using the right products and using them in the right way.

But, the first thing you need to do is work out what the problem is in the first place.

Dry Flaky Itchy Scalp? Dandruff – can be caused by a multiple of factors; seasonal, product build up, hormonal, skin prone to dryness.

***Pro Tips***

  • Avoid any products high in alcohol as they can contribute to drying the skin.
  • Over shampooing can strip your skin of the natural oils adding to the problem.
  • Water temperature shouldn’t be too hot when showering (Think of your natural oils being like butter – if your water is too hot it can literally melt away your natural oils and wash them straight down your shower drain)

This condition can seem similar to dandruff for some, with an itchy scalp and flaking. However, unlike dandruff this tends to be predominantly caused by stress and mainly affects those with sensitive skin prone to other skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

It is a build-up of skin cells that are producing too quickly and can have a silvery scaly appearance. There are many types of psoriasis that can affect different parts of the body but for scalp psoriasis it is generally worse at the nape and behind the ears.

There are products you can use to ease the discomfort, but lifestyle changes will help to eliminate the cause.

*In extreme cases, a visit to the doctor may also be needed.

Oily Scalp

The key here is to regulate the amount of sebum being produced. Unfortunately, this can be a difficult cycle. We shampoo often because it is oily, then our scalps produce more oil because it thinks it is dry. We are ultimately shampooing so often we are stripping our natural oils away…..

What we need to do here is NOT shampoo as often! AAArrrggghhh! Grease bucket!! Yes, that may be the case temporarily. But you need to allow your scalp time to realise it doesn’t need to produce as much sebum as it has in the past. BE PATIENT!

***Pro Tip*** Dry Shampoo for the days you want to shampoo but shouldn’t!

Oily Scalp + Dry ends

I get questioned about this ALLLL the time – the solution? Using two products to address each issue. I generally recommend a shampoo to regulate the oils (As recommended above), and then a nourishing conditioner for the ends. Only apply the conditioner to where it is needed. This will help your natural oils regulate.

You can also then follow with a hydrating serum or drops purely for the dry ends, prior to blowdrying.

Hair Loss

This one is a tough one. Depending on the underlying cause for the hair loss, topical products may not be as effective and more drastic measures may need to be taken. However, there are definitely benefits to anti hair loss products. They can slow the loss down, encourage new growth and also speed up the growing process. If you are concerned about your hair loss or losing hair in large clumps speak to your hairdresser or GP to get a better idea of the cause.
